North Texas School of
World Dance F.A.Q.! -I can't find your address on your
site. Where is your studio located? I teach out of my home in Frisco.
I don't list my address online for obvious reasons. When you call
for registration, you'll receive the address.
*Please Note - I have four friendly cats. If you are allergic or
scared of cats, you may not be able to attend my classes.* -How many students are in a class? I enroll 10 - 12 students per class.
My studio is about 500 square feet with wood-laminate flooring.
There are mirrors across the front of the studio length-wise.
There is ample room for everyone. -What should I wear to
class? You can wear comfortable workout
gear like yoga pants or leggings, and a fitted "T" or tank
top. Please don't wear anything too loose because I won't be able
to see your movements very well through baggy clothes. Shoes are
optional, although most students go barefoot or wear socks. If you
decide to wear shoes, ballet slippers, lyrical sandals or spit-sole jazz
shoes are the best option. Please no street shoes in the dance
studio.
-What time
should I arrive for class? Please arrive about 5 - 10 minutes early
to class. I teach out of my home. I can't open the door
earlier than about 10 - 15 minutes before a class time because I have
classes back to back. -How long does it take to learn Bellydance? Everyone is different. You must
remember that nobody can ever learn it all. That's part of the
beauty of Bellydance! There's so much information and so many
different styles of Bellydance to choose from, that the journey is
endless! Also because Bellydance is so integrated with many
different cultures, it makes the learning experience richer. Not
only do you learn "dance steps," but you'll learn about music,
rhythms, gestures, costuming, language and more! Back to your
question though, after about 6 months to a year, you'll feel pretty
grounded and confident with the basics, which is the heart of Bellydance. Advanced movements come from combining basic movements with
each other, generating speed, smooth transitions and finally having your
own style. My class format is designed to span over 10 years -
Level One through Level Six. I have been studying Bellydance
non-stop since 1996. Depending on students' personal
goals, dance background and practice time granted to the art form,
everyone's outcome is truly different. -When do I get to perform? I give all students who have completed
the 4 Level One classes a chance to perform as graduates in the annual
concert. Students are eligible to sign up for one or all of the
Level One choreographies that they learned. And of course if you
don't want to perform, you don't have to. Lots of students like to
come to class for the camaraderie and exercise! Students also have
the chance to audition for one of my three troupes after they have
completed Level One (Pro troupe auditionees must have a strong
background in other forms of dance or be enrolled in Level Three
classes.) -I think I'm a really good dancer, and
I want to hurry up and become a professional Bellydancer. What do
I need to do? Performing professionally is whole other
animal! Being a really good dancer is just one aspect of being a
true pro. I wouldn't encourage Beginner and Intermediate level students
to be
searching out paid dance jobs, or booking professional level jobs and doing
them free. Also, inexperienced students who are looking to be a
pro "overnight" as they say, should not "undercut"
(charge significantly less than the going rate to get a job) because they are just
starting out and don't think they're ready to charge pro rates.
You're either a pro charging pro rates or you're not ready to do pro
jobs. There are so many appropriate opportunities for students of
Bellydance to perform like haflas, student nights at restaurants,
student troupes and more! Getting the performance experience
you'll need to go pro (if that's your wish) will better serve you in
that journey. What you need to do is study, study, study (the
dance, music ,have many choreographies, know the cultures you're dealing
with, the business of Bellydance and have a ton of pro costumes and
MORE) and take the appropriate performance opportunities when they are
available so you'll be prepared for that day when you do your first pro
audition.

Belly Dance is a beautiful, feminine art form for women of all ages, sizes, shapes and backgrounds. Belly Dance classes are a supportive, bonding environment for women. It should really be called the Women's Dance instead of belly dance because it isn't exclusive to the Middle East anymore. Women all over the world are learning this ancient dance that has origins in preparation for childbirth. It has become a popular way to exercise, socialize and to seriously study another world dance art form, the same way Flamenco dancers and African dancers hone their art.
CLASS DEMO VIDEO BELOW!
Level 1: Belly Dance
Apprentice "Intro to Bellydance Technique: Head2Toe", "Classy
Cabaret", "Sassy Saidi" and "Delightful Drum Solo" are the four 10-week long sessions under the Level 1 umbrella.
Students must
complete all four sessions (in any order) before moving onto
"Belly Dance Addict" (Level 2). Sessions can be
repeated multiple times if the student feels it is necessary. The
repertoire of choreographies taught will change with each year to keep
things fresh!
All Level 1 students receive a complimentary practice music CD with
the Level 1 routine music on it! The CD details the name of the song,
artist and album. Students are encouraged to purchase the original albums
that the songs are taken from to start building their Bellydance music
collection. A link to purchase all level 1-6 CDs/individual songs will be
coming soon.
Intro to Bellydance Technique: Head2Toe: This
Level 1 technique class specifically addresses the movements in all of the Level
1 choreographies.
It is not a requirement to take this class first, but if you have never had any
movement-based classes like other dance forms, aerobics or even sports, then
this class would be ideal as a first choice. It can be taken at
anytime during the Level 1 cycle. No choreography will be taught in this
class. It is also set up as a 10-week long session.
Classy Cabaret:
The 2009 Choreography is an American Cabaret-style dance complete with a
veil-wrap entrance, sensual veil movements, upbeat sections with traveling
combinations, shimmies and lyrical arm movements, all to the music of Eddie
"The Sheik" Kochak!
2009 VIDEO CLIP:
Sassy Saidi:
This southern Egyptian cane or stick dance is derived
from a men's martial art called Tateeb. Women adapted the dance
over the years and it has become a light-hearted satire of men's machismo.
Traditional Bellydance is rooted in the folkloric dances of the Middle
East. The 2009 choreography is set to a lively piece called "El
Baston" by Mario Kirlis. Sassy Saidi is one of the more challenging
Level 1 dances because of the prop that's incorporated into the dance, but it's
definitely one of the more fun and aerobic routines as well.
2009 VIDEO CLIP:
2008 VIDEO CLIP:
Delightful Drum Solo:
Drum solos are technically challenging and are the
highlight of a belly dancer's show! They are traditionally performed duet
style with a doumbek player, and are usually totally improvisational!
In this class you will learn a choreographed drum solo to the music, Dancer's
Paradise Tabla by Raja (Tabla is the Arabic word for drum.)
2009 VIDEO CLIP:
Level 2: Belly Dance
Addict :) "Level 2 Technique: Head2Toe", "Raqs Sharqi
Revolution", "Veiled Visions", "Earthy Ethnic
Fusion", "Zill Zeal", and "Footloos Folkloric" are the seven 10-week long sessions under the Level 2
umbrella. Students must complete all seven sessions (in any order)
before moving onto "Belly Dance Beauty" (Level 3). Sessions can be
repeated multiple times if the student feels it is necessary. The
repertoire of choreographies taught will change with each year to keep
things fresh!
Level 2 Technique: Head2Toe: This Level 2 technique class specifically addresses the movements in all of
the Level 2 choreographies.
It is not a requirement to take this class first. It can be taken at
anytime during the Level 2 cycle. No complete choreography will be taught in this
class. The focus is on technique of individual movements, transitions and
memorization. It is also set up as a 10-week long session.
Raqs Sharqi Revolution: This class will introduce students to modern and
classic Egyptian stylizations of Belly Dance, which is performed to dynamic,
orchestrated music with many rhythm and mood changes. Raqs Sharqi is
usually performed as solo dance. The 2009 choreography is set to music by
Dr. Samy Farag called, "Rakasni Ya Habibi." Buy the Music: Peko

2009 VIDEO CLIP:
Veiled Visions: Students will learn an American Cabaret-Style veil
dance to the Turkish Chiftitelli rhythm. This dance starts with a dramatic
veil wrap and evolves into a technically challenging and visually stunning
display of shapes and colors! Music by Alan

re-ignite your inspiration for creating choreographies and/or improvisational
dances. We'll stretch our creativity to the limits by learning how to
create unusual and interesting movement combinations! By the time this 10
