Costuming Tips
Here are some costuming tips that I use! Enjoy!
1) Instead of using safety pins to keep your skirts and belt together, take the time to sew extra large snaps on the waist bands of the skirts and to the underside of the belt to keep all parts together! It takes time, but in the long run, it makes getting dressed much faster and you don't end up poking your fingers with the pins.
2) If your skirt has high slits or a skirt that flies up during spins, wear cheerleader shorts underneath! You can order them online and they come in all colors and even shiny, sparkly, sequined material, to match any costume!
3) Make sure your bra straps are super tight and actually "lift the girls!" LOL! Even though it may be uncomfortable at first, the tighter your straps are, the better you'll look. Your torso will look longer and you'll look leaner.
4) Wear stage makeup! The kind of makeup you wear everyday, or even for a night out on the town, is not enough for a performer! Schedule a consultation with a makeup artist to learn "Stage Makeup" techniques. Stage makeup is meant to exaggerate your features from a distance, to prevent you from becoming "washed out" under extremely bright stage lights and to simply be glamorous and fantasy-like! Some things that you may use with stage makeup but not with everyday makeup are the following:
-False lashes, BIG ONES!
-Face contouring along the jawline, cheekbones, temples, nose and more
-Waterproof (sweat-proof) formulas
-Makeup sealers for eyes and entire face to make cosmetics last through an entire night of gigs and sweat
-Extra dark, pronounced eyebrows (Don't forget your eyebrows!)
-Intense, bright lipstick!
-5) Don't forget your hair! Volume, glamour and sweat-proof are the keys. Don't be afraid of trying different styles and even hair pieces. Think of your hair as part of your costume; you plan out your music, steps, costume...so wear your hair different with every costume! Try to break old routines and experiment with new and different hair styles! And don't forget to use PLENTY of hair pins and spray to keep your style in place. Try these hair sprays for stage-worthy hair styles:
-SUPER-DUPER Hold, like glue practically: Freeze IT - Mega Freeze
-Great hold, but easier to brush out: L'Oréal Elnett Extra StrongHold Hairspray
And finally, do research on your own by purchasing beauty magazines and looking up tips online - especially use YouTube; there is a TON of information there!
Tip: Drag Queens have great tips for stage makeup!!!
