The Crazy Ups & Downs of Creating "Sa'diyya ONLINE!"

4/1/2015

Picture
Here it is April 1, 2015 and I've been working on my online classes project for over a year!  I have learned so much, and I have ran into so many road blocks with this whole process.  The most recent one being this past week learning that most of the footage I filmed for the April 1st release had audio issues which made the videos unacceptable to publish.  I am a bit of a perfectionist, but I also want to present a really high quality, professional product, so I need a couple more weeks to overcome these technical glitches.

"What kind of road blocks?" you may be wondering.  The list is long and will probably keep growing for a while as I continue to learn about this process.  The first thing I was up against about a year ago was my naivety.  I had no idea how much is involved.  Initially, I was just going to use what I had on hand: Microsoft Movie Maker that came on my cheap laptop, an inexpensive digital camera that happened to film videos, too, and film it in my home studio with some portable mirrors using only the microphone on the camera.

PicturePosters/"DVD" Covers to advertise content
Before I came to the conclusion that I didn't have the tools needed to create my vision, I had made notebooks full of ideas for what I was going to teach.  I have more than fifteen years of material for multiple levels of students, so the hardest part was narrowing down where to start.  And I was limited by which songs I had permission to use.  Once I solidified exactly what I'd be teaching, I spent time organizing the chosen topics into logical chapters, editing music and rehearsing the choreographies and combinations that I would be teaching.  I also spent time expanding and building my website for "Sa'diyya ONLINE."  Another thing I learned was that I had to have a way of selling the files.  So I had to upgrade my website in order to sell digital goods.

I soon discovered that I needed a wireless microphone after filming a test run and hearing that my voice was muddled and hard to understand.  After doing some research and settling on a barebones lapel mic that would get the job done, I figured out that my little digital camera didn't have a mic jack to connect the wireless mic receiver into.  Guess what that meant?  A new camera.  So my husband and I went camera shopping and found a higher end camera that would film 1080HD quality footage AND work with my wireless lapel mic.

Picture
Part of my expanded website showing the complete class menu!
Oftentimes, you get what you pay for, and that was definitely the case with my barebones cheap wireless mic.  After doing another test run, I could see that I needed a better quality lapel mic.  I'm starting to notice how one thing is leading to another...
PictureLet There Be Light!
Next, I discover that no matter how bright I try to make my dance studio, it's just not cutting it.  I need some professional studio lighting for filming.  Luckily, I have a wonderful husband who has a lot of faith in me and this project.  We both see that if this is going to be done right, we are going to have to invest in it.

The next hurdle was my existing laptop.  That machine was not even powerful enough to upload the files from my new camera onto it.  When I tried to edit some footage with Microsoft Movie Maker, it would take FOREVER, and I soon discovered that I could not create chapters in that program.  I feel like these classes must be chaptered so the students can navigate through the material more easily.  So...at my husband's suggestion we got a MacBook Pro with TONS of power and storage space.  And we invest in professional movie editing software, Final Cut Pro.

PictureRevised!
At this point, we are in December of 2014.  Nine months of thinking, I'm going to have this up and running any day now, had gone by.  After more test filming, we decide to remodel my dance studio with new curtains and mirrors.  The finished look is lighter, brighter and because of the new mirrors, I have so much more room when I'm filming!

Over the last several months, I've had 3-4 false starts due to technical difficulties.  Since I'm learning this as I go, mistakes are my greatest teacher.  One time not too long ago, I filmed a ton of footage only to discover that I was out of focus the ENTIRE time.  I had to throw out all of it.  That's when I decided that I needed a cameraman, so now my husband helps me!

We got all the content filmed for my free teaser classes, but with some minor audio issues.  I managed to edit some of those audio problems out with Final Cut Pro.  And learning Final Cut Pro....it makes my brain hurt!  FCP is NOT user-friendly.  I had to look up tutorials online and just feel around in the dark for a while.  I'm still learning how to use it, but at least I have the basics down.

This last batch of videos also had some audio issues that were so bad, the footage isn't salvageable.  There were words missing in my speech and loud pops and clicks.  We discovered that the frequency we were using with the wireless mic was causing the problem.  We also learned how to find a better channel, which solved the problem.

So, my most recent big adjustment is changing the release dates.  I still have so much to learn, that until I have a built up library waiting in the wings to publish, I'm just going to release them when they're ready.  I have an estimated schedule just announcing that certain topics will be released during a certain month.  In the near future, I will return to the 1st and 15th schedule once I have more kinks worked out!

I'm unbelievably excited about this first batch of videos that will be released over the next few months!
It's going to feature a beginner program that includes detailed technique breakdowns, transition exercises and an accompanying choreography.  Also coming in this next round is a very detailed breakdown of the Egyptian knee shimmy with 3 different ways to practice and gain consistency.  For more advanced dancers, I'll have a complete drum solo choreography that's lots of fun and an audience-pleaser!  And I'll also offer a class that introduces students to playing and dancing with finger cymbals.

Check out the free teaser classes I already have posted HERE.  Feel free to download them, too!  I hope you'll come back and visit to check out the next round of videos coming soon.  Thanks for your support!

More About Christine Yaven:

Dubbed “Indonesia’s bellydance icon”, Christine Yaven fell in love with bellydance over a decade ago while pursuing an advanced degree in Australia. Since opening Indonesia’s premiere Middle-Eastern dance Centre, Bellydance Jakarta, she has earned a reputation as one of South East Asia’s trailblazers, known as a leading authority and instructor.

Although she is an Ivy League graduate (Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania), she ultimately decided to pursue her passion for bellydance. She is Indonesia’s only certified instructor, having undertaken intensive training courses held by world famous, acclaimed masters of Middle-Eastern dance, namely Hadia (Canada); Raqia Hassan (Egypt);Tamalyn Dallal (Bellydance Superstars, USA) as well as studying extensively through workshops and intensive courses throughout the globe with other respected Middle-Eastern dance artists to constantly deepen her knowledge of this dance form.

Christine’s teaching not only spans precise technique, she also teaches the soul, values and heritage of this beautiful dance, ensuring that her ever growing student body also approach this ancient art-form with the respect it deserves.

Her performances are mesmerizing, a perfect fusion of liquid motions, subtle sensuality and exquisite musicality. Her talent is rivaled only by her teaching abilities, making her one of the region’s most in demand Middle-Eastern artistes. Besides frequent requests to impart her expertise around the country, Christine is the first Indonesian instructor to have the honor of being invited to teach and perform overseas at international festivals in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Italy and more.

Since opening her doors in 2006, Christine has directed and staged several large bellydance productions at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta (Jakarta Performance Arts Theater) as part of the Jakarta Anniversary Festival, drawing crowds of up to 350 people. She has also captured the interest of local and international press, featured in dozens of articles and segments in newspapers such as the Jakarta Globe and The Malaysian Star.

In 2012, she co-founded Raks by the SEA, South East Asia's first bellydance festival which was held in Bali, Indonesia this year and drew more than 70 participants from around the world.

It's here!  It's here!  Here is a description from the Cheeky Girls Productions website:

Welcome to The Move Before the Move!  This DVD explores the linchpin of professional dancing: smooth transitions.  Even if you have perfect technique, the skill of seamlessly weaving your movements together is an art unto itself.   A polished and professional dancer allows one move to effortlessly flow into the next, creating a fluid dance rather than a laundry list of steps.

Sa’diyya’s clear instruction and attention to detail make her the perfect dancer to tackle this subject.  First she outlines several concrete techniques that can be used to create smooth transitions, then she demonstrates them in use with several combinations.  Each combination has a “before” and an “after” section, allowing you to clearly see the difference that is made by using fluid transitions.

As an extra bonus, all of the combinations can be strung together to create a complete, stage-ready choreography to the dynamic song Nagwa.  The DVD is extensively chaptered for enhanced learning and drilling, and at the end you will get to see Sa’diyya perform the piece in a live theater show setting.

Sa’diyya is the winner of the hit reality show Project Belly Dance Season 2.  The creation of this DVD is part of her prize, along with several workshop opportunities and a custom-made belly dance costume.  You can see the show online for absolutely free HERE!

Again, I'd like to thank Michelle Joyce of Cheeky Girls Productions, my mentors Jillina and Aziza, all the judges and voters from Project Belly Dance, my husband, my super enthusiastic students, all of my family and friends who supported me during this crazy time and the amazing and colorful belly dance community around the world who constantly inspires me!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW STUDY TOOL FOR SERIOUS BELLY DANCERS
Mystifying Transitions Explained; Gain That Fluid, Seamless Appearance In Your Dance

Picture

Transitions are an important element of belly dance that elude many dancers.  Often times, dancers can easily learn individual movements and can remember the order of the movements when put to a piece of music.  But there still may be something missing.  That "something" is what takes the individual movements and connects them seamlessly so the steps become a DANCE!

In the soon-to-be-released DVD, "The Move Before The Move: Transitions for Belly Dancers," Project Belly Dance Winner, Sa'diyya, will thoroughly explain the many secrets of successful transitions and instruct students on how to implement many key concepts (see below) into their dancing.

Sa'diyya is a multiple award earning performer and choreographer who has been involved in Middle Eastern dance for almost two decades.  Her multitude of hours teaching thousands of students and her fun, light-hearted personality adds to the high quality of instruction that is presented in the new DVD, "The Move Before The Move: Transitions for Belly Dancers with Sa'diyya."  Just see for yourself what students of all levels are saying about Sa'diyya's teaching talents and her upcoming DVD release:

You've got great material and a great personality.
-Bahaia

This brand new DVD will include a quick warm up for dancers, a list of 10 key concepts that help to better explain successful transitions in belly dance, 12 "before & after" combinations that present movements strung together without and then with transitions using those before mentioned key concepts.  And finally an entire choreography base that students can use as their own jumping-off point to create their own unique dance with smooth and interesting transitions.  Look out for "The Move Before The Move: Transitions for Belly Dancers with Sa'diyya" this Summer for sale on Sa'diyya's website www.SadiyyaDance.com and on the Cheeky Girls Productions website www.CheekyGirlsProductions.com!

On Friday March 8, 2013, Sa'diyya will be performing a special solo in this hafla featuring Raquy & the Cavemen!

See the information below (text taken from www.petitefleurproductions.com):

Petite Fleur Productions Presents - Raquy and the Cavemen

March 8, 2013 @ The Cameo Theater Party Room - 8PM
Come listen to the amazing drumming talent of Raquy and Liron, along with special guest drummer Rami El-Aasser!

Click here for more information, show tickets and workshop registration!

Middle-Eastern drumming sensation Raquy and the Cavemen are a duo of virtuoso drummers / multi-instrumentalists who bring hard rock energy to the mystical rhythms of the Middle East.

Raquy Danziger and Liron Peled, a former couple, started the band when they were married - Raquy is a world renowned virtuoso on the dumbek (Middle-Eastern hand drum), expressing her love of Middle Eastern music with the inspiration she absorbed in her travels. Liron has had a rich background as an incredible, world-touring hard rock drummer. Together they've created a fresh new sound, bringing out the best of both genres.

Raquy and the Cavemen switch between energetic drumming compositions and intoxicating melodic pieces. Utilizing a variety of unusual instruments including the Kemenche (an ancestor of the violin), Dumset (Middle Eastern drumset) and Mongolian Throat singing (see full instrument descriptions below), Raquy and the Cavemen's huge sound and mind-blowing show leaves listeners transported, uplifted and full of joy.

Raquy and the Cavemen have released Six CD's (See discography below). They have performed at Central Park SummerStage, LollaPalooza and PASIC, and have collaborated with some of the biggest names in Middle-Eastern music, including Omar Faruk Tekbilek and Saiid El-Artist. They have also shared the stage with Mickey Hart.

Their music has received radio airplay (reaching the top 20 in the CMJ Radio Airplay chart) and has been licensed in movie soundtracks and dance performances worldwide.

Their show features several exotic instruments:

Dumbek - Raquy specializes in the dumbek, the Middle Eastern goblet drum. She has shared the stage with some of the greatest drummers in the Middle East. Her style combines techniques that she learned in various countries, but especially features the amazing new Turkish Split Hand Technique that she has been studying in Istanbul. In Raquy's original drumming compositions, the dumbek, usually used as accompaniment in ensemble pieces, becomes a shining solo instrument. Audiences are amazed by the speed, dexterity and finesse of Raquy's playing.

Kemenche Tarhu - Raquy's other instrument, the Kemenche Tarhu, is a haunting 12 stringed spiked fiddle designed after the Persian kemenche (spikefiddle.com). Raquy plays original compositions on the Kemenche, based on the Middle Eastern tonal modes, as well as a selection of favorite traditional tunes.

Dumset - Liron combined his hard rock drum set background with Middle Eastern traditional drums by inventing the Dum Set. The Dum Set consists of Liron's "Baboombeck" (big copper dumbek), a bass dumbek played with one foot, a Riq (tambourine) played with the other foot, and cymbals played with his hands.

11 String Guitar - Liron took a beautiful 12-String guitar, and restrung it with 11 thin strings to sound like a cross between a guitar, a sitar and a saz, bringing the instrument a new exotic character.

Throat Singing - Liron learned how to throat sing from his friend Nezih, who figured out how to do it himself while he was on mushrooms. Now Liron uses this incredible sound to entrance listeners and add a synth bass-like sound to Raquy and the Cavemen.
